Optimize the SCM Lock-In Phase

The image contrast may be improved by optimizing the SCM Lock-In Phase:

  1. Engage the probe tip with the sample.

  1.  Click the SCM Tune icon in the Workflow Toolbar to open the SCM Tune window, shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Start Tune on Surface

  1. Set the Tip offset to 0 nm.
  2. Click OK to open the SCM Tune window, shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2:  SCM Tune: SCM Tune window

  1. Set the Channel 1 Data Type to dC/dV I and the Channel 2 Data Type to dC/dV Q.
  2. Set the Sweep Output to SCM Lock-In Phase
  3. Click the Offset Cursor Mode radio button.
  4. Drag the dashed red cursor to the point of maximum response and click Execute to set the SCM Lock-In Phase.
  5. Click Exit to exit the SCM Tune function.
  6. This will change the SCM Lock-In Phase to maximize the dC/dV I signal and minimize the dC/dV Q signal. See Figure 3.
