Here is a summary of precautions to follow during your learning phase. When appropriate safety precautions are observed, the Dimension Icon is robust against damage.
Even if you have prior experience with the Dimension Icon, be sure to read the Probe and Sample Guide and SPM Training Guide before attempting any imaging work. A comprehensive overview of how to run the Dimension Icon is provided in the Overview of AFM Operation section, and is recommended reading and reference material for all users. Detailed information on specific Imaging Modes is provided and should be referenced as required before attempting a specific technique. Consult the NanoScope 8.15 User Guide for a complete explanation of software controls.
Engagement refers to the process of bringing the tip and surface together. This is not a simple process and the software routine for controlling it is complex. Some probes (especially crystal silicon TappingMode probes) can be broken or damaged if engaged too quickly or with excessive force. Ensure that engagement settings never exceed the limits of safety and never attempt to engage manually using coarse adjustment screws.
The head contains the probe holder, laser and photodiode array. An XY translation stage is provided for moving the head and probe several millimeters across the sample for coarse adjustment. Users are advised to disengage before using the XY stage to reposition the head over long distances. Even for relatively smooth samples and flexible cantilever probes, the head should be moved with great caution while the tip is engaged because tip breakage can occur.
When you are finished with an imaging session, follow the power down sequence: turn off the controller, then turn off the computer. If the controller is left ON for a substantial time without an energized computer, damage to the scanner may result. (This is especially true if the scan has been heavily offset in X and Y.)
Unplugging or plugging cables on energized hardware is not recommended and may result in damage to the Dimension Icon. Always turn OFF hardware before making electrical connections.
External equipment that is hard-wired into the Dimension Icon, such as for Electric Force Microscopy (EFM) and ECSTM imaging, requires special care. To prevent damage to your microscope, always check connections and documented instructions before energizing the system.
