Removing the Dimension Icon Scanner and Installing the Dimension FastScan Scanner

Users with both the Dimension Icon and Dimension FastScan scanners can select the scanner most appropriate for their investigations. It is important that the software recognize which scanner is installed. To switch from the Dimension Icon to Dimension FastScan scanner, use the procedure below.

HINT: Enter Realtime (by loading an experiment) prior to beginning the scanner swap procedure. Use the System Status Indicator to ensure the system is in order before proceeding.
  1. Click the Select Experiment icon to open the Select Experiment window:

  1. Click the Change Scanner link to activate the Equipment Change wizard.
  2. Select FastScan to indicate to the software which new hardware you will install:

To remove the Dimension Icon scanner:

  1. Unplug the connector wire that runs from the scanner to the Dimension Icon microscope base.
  2. Loosen (by turning clockwise) the screw located on the right side of the Dimension Icon SPM scanner dovetail to release the scanner.
  3. Carefully slide the Dimension Icon scanner up and out of the dovetail groove.
  4. Place the Dimension Icon scanner in the box it shipped in. To prevent damage to the scanner, NEVER leave the scanner sitting on a shelf or table top. ALWAYS leave the scanner either in its box when not mounted on the microscope.

NOTE: The Z scanner should NOT be in place when you are installing the Dimension FastScan head (XY scanner) on the system.

To connect the Dimension FastScan scanner:

  1. Ensure the clamp screw in the scanner dovetail is loose and the screw is out of the way.
  2. Grasp the Dimension FastScan scanner by the handles on the top and left hand side, carefully line it up on the dovetail, and gently lower it into place.
  3. Clamp the Dimension FastScan head in place by tightening the screw on the left hand side of the dovetail using the 3/16" hex driver.
  4. Push the Z scanner vacuum tubing onto its connector and twist to lock it in place.
  5. Plug in the camera power cable and camera USB cable.
  6. On the right hand side of the microscope, plug in the motor control connector then the head connector.
  1. Click Next. The wizard will display a window with instructions on installing the Dimension FastScan Z scanner and a diagram to help you identify the relevant components:

To install the Z scanner:

  1. Holding the Z scanner in your left hand and the Z scanner connector cable in your right hand, orient the Z scanner so the probe is on the bottom side (be careful not to touch the probe mount region at the bottom of the Z scanner). You will notice two rounded grooves, each with a deeper hole at one end, on the side of the Z scanner opposite the probe mount.
  2. There is a tapered plug coming down from the bottom of the Dimension FastScan scanner head and two small pins that protrude down from the plug. Gently push the scanner onto the tapered plug with the probe tip facing down.
  3. Ensure that the Z scanner connector cable is oriented so that the connector can be plugged into the head. The pins underneath the scanner head should be settled into the rounded grooves of the Z scanner. These will help you align the pins. Twist the Z scanner clockwise (looking from above) until the pins become seated (you will feel a hard stop where the scanner will not twist further).
  4. Turn the vacuum for the Z scanner/probe holder ON.
  5. Plug the Z scanner connector cable into the Dimension FastScan scanner head.
  1. Click Finish. Wait for the NanoScope popup to appear, informing you that NanoScope has to be restarted:

  1. Click OK; NanoScope will close.
  2. Manually restart NanoScope 8.15 to proceed with your experiments using the new scanner.
