Second Generation Small Sample Adapter

The Second generation Small Sample Adapter, shown in Figure 1, supersedes the First Generation Small Sample Adapter. This two part design incorporates a simple disposable Teflon washer that is much less expensive than the First Generation Small Sample Adapter.

The Second Generation Small Sample Adapter replaces the insulating insert and is comprised of several parts:

  1. An insulating (Kel-F®) small sample insert.
  2. A Teflon small sample disk.
  3. A spring to make electrical contact with the back of the sample.
  4. A Kalrez O-ring to seal the assembly.

The Teflon small sample disk, shown in Figure 1, accommodates either:

  1. Round samples up to 20 mm diameter.
  2. Rectangular samples up to 15 mm square.

Samples are intended to be glued with Torr Seal (included) to the roughened (by Sodium Ammonia etching) Teflon disk. The sample surface should be parallel to the Teflon disk. The overall thickness of Teflon disk plus sample should be 2.8 to 3 mm. To allow the O-ring to seal, the sample should not intrude on the outer 3 mm of the Teflon disk.

Electrical contact is made to the sample using a small spring through the hole in the disk, shown in Figure 3.
