Installation Instructions

If used in a glovebox, it is necessary to install the feedthrough assembly, shown in Figure 1, on a KF40 port in the rear of the glovebox.

The following steps guide you through the process:

1. Bruker recommends that you use a port that can be seen from the glove side of the glovebox.

2. If necessary, tidy the glovebox.
3. Overpressurize the glovebox to approximately 10 mbar per manufacturer instructions.
4. Unpack the feedthrough and uncoil the fiber optic cable.
5. Install the threaded black plastic ferule on the cable. See Figure 2.

6. Apply a film of vacuum grease to the mating face/groove of the KF-40 flange.
7. Remove the installed KF-40 blank (you may need a tool to pry it off) and cover the hole with your hand.
8. Feed the locating ring and O-ring from the KF-40 blank over the fiber optic and locate it on the feedthrough flange.
9. Feed the fiber optic cable as quickly as possible through a gap between your fingers (to minimize atmosphere losses in the glovebox) into the glovebox.

10. Install the feedthrough flange and clamp it in place.
11. Install a second fiber optic cable on the outside of the feedthrough and install a ferule on the other end.

If used in the AVH-1000 it is necessary to:

1. Install a cable clamp, shown in Figure 3, on the left side of the AVH-1000.

2. Join 2 fiber optic cables using the SMA adapter supplied with the kit. See Figure 4.

3. Feed the fiber optic cable through the cable clamp (from the outside) into the AVH-1000 ensuring an adequate bend radius.
4. Install the threaded black plastic cable ferrules on both ends of the fiber optic cable. See Figure 5.

	Click the Navigate icon in the Workflow toolbar and move the chuck/stage under the head.
	Click the Find Surface icon and record the Z height of the chuck surface, displayed in the NanoScope status bar, shown in Figure 6.
	If you are not using TappingMode, manually focus on the surface and record the Z height.

	Use the Z Motor Up function in the Scan Head panel to bring the head to the top of its travel.
	Bring the stage to the front left of the microscope and remove the installed chuck. Remove the head from the dovetail and store it in the shipping case. Install the alignment station stop using 2 #10 button hex head screws (supplied) [0.125" hex drive]. Push the stop to be flush with the alignment station to ensure that it captures the current location of the alignment station. See Figure 7.

Remove the alignment station and store it in a safe location being careful not to damage the optical standard. Clean the top of the granite base and the chuck base.

1. Remove the white plastic shipping screws, shown in Figure 8.

2. If the shipping screws are not installed, verify that the Backside Illumination Optics Assembly X-Y stage is approximately in its center of travel.
3. Move, by rotating the Z translate knob clockwise, the Backside Illumination Optics Assembly Z stage to the bottom of its travel.

4. Ensure that the bottom side of the Backside Illumination Optics Assembly is clean, especially the O-rings.
5. Turn the Optics X-Y adjustment lock OFF (down) — the switch is on the left side of the Backside Illumination Optics Assembly. See Figure 14.

1. Place the Backside Illumination Optics Assembly behind the chuck, angling it while doing so as to avoid impacting the microscope optics.
2. With the Backside Illumination Optics Assembly raised just above the surface of the granite (so as not to rub the O-rings), position it so that the right hand side is pushed back against the limit switch holder, and pulled in sideways to the granite. See Figure 10 and Figure 11.

3. Lower the Backside Illumination Optics Assembly onto the granite base ensuring that you keep in contact with granite and the limit switch holder.

4. Connect the vacuum inlet coupling, shown in Figure 14, to the mating ‘VACUUM’ connector, shown in Figure 13, to the left of microscope optics. Once connected, the Backside Illumination Optics Assembly frame should be held in place– pull up gently on the handles to verify this.

5. Switch the X-Y Adjustment lock ON (UP) and gently pull up the Y translate screw, shown in Figure 9, to verify that it is pulled down.
6. Turn OFF the X-Y adjustment lock.
7. Feed the fiber optic cable through left handle and insert ferrule into optics, push into the stop and clamp in place with the thumb screw shown in Figure 15.

1. Connect the external fiber optic cable to the light source.

1. Ensure that the head has an appropriate probe holder and that a probe is loaded and reinstall the head.
2. Align the crosshairs in the Setup view with the probe tip.
3. Move the head to the previously recorded Z height, then drop an additional 1500 μm (approximately).
4. Set the Microscope Illumination fairly high but no so high as to wash out the camera.
5. Verify that the Optics X-Y Adjustment Lock is OFF (down) and, looking directly at the Backside Illumination Optics Assembly, adjust the X-Y stage so that the visible light spot is centered on top focusing lens as shown in Figure 16.

6. Looking at the monitor at 0X zoom you should see (Figure 17) a bright spot in the field of view. If the spot is not visible, then adjust the X-Y stage slightly in each direction until it is in view.

7. Center the spot on the tip crosshairs – it may be slightly taller than field of view; so center as well as possible.

8. Reduce the Illumination. A darker area, the optical fiber, should appear in the center of the light spot. See Figure 19.

9. Adjust the microscope Z stage to bring the dark area into focus as shown in Figure 20.

10. Adjust the X-Y stage to center the fiber on the crosshairs as shown in Figure 21.

11. Change to 2X zoom and fine tune the X-Y alignment as shown in Figure 22.

12. Turn the Optics X-Y Adjustment Lock ON and verify that the spot location is unchanged. Adjust the X-Y position as necessary, remembering to turn X-Y Adjustment Lock (vacuum switch) OFF.
13. Use the Z Motor Up function in the Scan Head panel to bring the head to the top of its travel.

1. Secure the chuck to the chuck base using two M3 x 8 mm socket head cap screws [2.5 mm hex drive]. See Figure 23.

2. Teach the new alignment station location. Refer to the Dimension Icon microscope manual for details.

1. Install the terminal block on left front of the chuck base front using knurled captive screw as shown in Figure 24. Ensure that the ledge at top sits on the top of the chuck.

2. Install Cable from the terminal block to:

1. For the Glove Box, route to feed thru the connector labeled ELECTROCHEM.

2. For the AVH-1000, feed through the cable clamp.
