PFM Vertical and Horizontal Domains Operation

Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) can be used to investigate various piezoresponsive domains. The PFM Optimized Vertical Domains Operation workspace is designed for imaging of vertical domains. Horizontal (lateral) domains are not often imaged alone.

This section outlines the basic operational procedures involved in obtaining Vertical & Horizontal Domain PFM data with the Dimension Icon. Horizontal domains require use of the NanoScope V Generic Lock-in. See Piezoresponse with the NanoScope V Generic Lock-Ins for details.

Steps to acquiring PFM Data (Vertical Domains):

1. Set Up the Experiment
2. Load a probe.
3. In the Setup view, identify the probe and focus on the cantilever.
4. Align the laser and photodetector.
5. Using the Navigate view, load a piezoresponsive sample and focus the optics on the sample surface.
6. Using the Check Parameters view, review the preloaded scan parameters and modify them as needed.
7. Engage on the sample.
8. Set up the Generic Lock-Ins to obtain PFM scans.
